62. See all the movie's on AFI's top 100 list (10/123)

This post will be dedicated to Movie #64:  Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

I first saw this film when I was really young.  I was playing with my best friend/neighbor when it came on TV.  This is weird for a couple of reasons.  1)  We never really watched TV together  2)  What station were we watching that this movie would have come on?  (My guess is TBS after a Saved By the Bell or Parker Lewis episode) and 3) Why did we keep watching?  Didn't we get bored?

If you've seen this movie you know that it can be very drawn out and pretty long for a young child to watch, but we both watched it as if we were watching something forbidden.  Maybe we were actually intrigued by the storyline but I think we were mostly scared about the idea of aliens.  Ok- we were really scared.  I can hear those eerie 5-notes now...

Crazy enough but I actually want to visit Devil's Tower and the surrounding area.  The Black Hills of South Dakota (and into Northeast Wyoming) are a big network of State Parks and lots of other attractions like Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, Hot Springs, and lakes.  I picture a camping/road-trip adventure sneaking around the area and taking in all of the history and scenery.

  1. The basalt tower in Antarctica totally made me think of this movie! I've never seen Devil's Tower, but I'd love to go...

    1. Likewise Kristin! Everyone kept referencing Devil's Tower and I was bummed I didn't have first knowledge to compare it to. It's also a reason I'll put the Giant's Causeway on my list of things to try and see in Ireland at some point. Basalt columns are awesome!

  2. Hannah! I just found your blog and had to comment on this post... I've been to Devil's Tower and it is really cool. We watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the drive and saw Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, and a WY rodeo all in the same trip. I definitely recommend!
