17. Visit Antarctica

The big trip is getting so close!

I can't believe that in less than two weeks I'll be embarking on such a huge adventure. The anxious/excited/nervous butterflies have definitely started.

The packing has also started. I am a last minute packer who sometimes throws a suitcase together the morning of a trip, but that definitely won't work this time around. What does a person take when visiting one of the most remote continents in the world? Thankfully we received a suggested packing list to help us out.

Even though it's the height of their summer (seasons are opposite ours since they're in the opposite hemisphere) it will still be in the 30-degree range. There will obviously be lots of snow and lots of wind. In other words, we need to bring winter gear. Turns out after years of city living, I hardly had anything on hand appropriate for the great outdoors.

Suggested items: Scarves and neck gators
My version that I own: Pashminas

Suggested items: Hiking boots
My version that I own: Uggs and Hunter Wellies

Suggested items: Stocking Hats and Ear-Warmers
My version that I own: Berets

Suggested items: Mittens
My version that I own: iPhone-compatible gloves

Suggested items: Long underwear
My version that I own: American Apparel Leggings

My urban-wear versions were not going to cut it. Therefore the last couple of weeks I've been collecting outerwear and apparel that is going to keep me warm and be functional for the excursions. I've tried really hard to search for deals and buy things that I could use again once the trip is over. My parents also saved me by bringing a lot of stuff we used to have from old ski trips or even the days we'd play for hours in the snow.

I've already started to compile the items into my suitcase. The other challenge will also be packing for the two days we're spending in Buenos Aires at the end of the trip. The weather there will be more seasonally appropriate and averaging in the 80-degree range!

Seeing the suitcase fill up starts to make this all real. I don't know if it will really sink in until I'm getting ready to board that plane. Eeks!
