A Streetcar Named Desire was originally a play written by the famed Tennessee Williams. After it's success on Broadway, the majority of the actors and actresses were picked to make this black and white film version.
Well, what can I say. This movie was crazy.
Stanley was crazy...
Stella was crazy for being with Stanley...
And Blanche was actually crazy (that's part of the movie...)
Also, Marlon Brando ripped his shirt a lot.
After discussing this film with various people (who I consider to have extremely differing and respectable viewpoints), turns out I'm not appreciating this film for what it's worth. Both said that the original play is much, much better and holds many more interesting themes and undertones.
The film ended up winning four Oscars: Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Art Direction and nominated for pretty much every category. I suppose the acting was good since they all convinced me they were crazy!
I had no idea what to expect from Streetcar and I wish I would've had a better background before I watched the movie. Then I would have understood (and probably enjoyed) the craziness.
I'm curious to read the original Tennessee Williams piece. Perhaps that can make it on the next 101 list.
However, I bet there is one line that the movie actually does better....
"Stellaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!"
