The latest sport my students have become active in is baseball. I've never had students play baseball before but I could tell it was a big deal when they started wearing their new hats, talking non-stop about practice, and showing off their new "sport slang".
This week I got to go to another game. I feel like an oddball walking in because I so obviously stand out, but I'm an instant celebrity since SO MANY of my kids hang out there. Seriously, I tallied 30 students (past and present) that were in the area just hanging out.
My kids did great! This game was particularly special because my two students were playing against each other. They're both in the league with the older kids and their teams are good. It's funny because one child who is strong, confident, and even a little cocky in my class is the little young one on the team. He brags in our classroom but is nervous and self-conscious on the field. Another student who talks a big game is....less than talented....and I smile to myself knowing he's lying when he shows off at school.
At the last game one parent told me, "I'm so surprised you're here! He said that his teacher was coming but I didn't believe him. I told him that no one would come out here after working all day. Aren't you tired??" When she said this it resonated with me. In fact, I was exhausted and had contemplated skipping out! That's why I put these games on my list because I am always SO glad that I went... but I'm often tempted to take the easy route and not go. Having the goal of attending the games will help me to think twice and make the right decision. It's fun, nice to be outside, and connects me to my school, students, and the community....all of this just by going to a baseball game! I can't wait to keep going to more!
This picture shows my student (Number 5) with his Dad giving him some advice in the dugout :)
