Have I mentioned how much I love NPR?
I know I've said it at least once but don't worry, it will probably come out a few (hundred?) more times. Those who know me know that I say, "Well I heard on NPR that..." way more than a person probably should :)
The particular channel I tune into is WNYC and I listen to everything from Morning Report and All Things Considered to Fresh Air and Wait Wait! Don't Tell Me. Some programs I have to download as podcasts, but nothing can replace the smooth voices of Soterios Johnson or Amy Eddings coming through my car radio.
NPR is like free therapy to me. On my way into work, my anxiety tends to build. However NPR zones me out and keeps me informed. My mind is calmed as I get my news. On the way home, it is a great way to pull out of the chaotic and hectic environment I've been immersed in all day and focus on what is happening around the world and in other peoples' lives.
Furthermore, it is so interesting. I really enjoy what I hear! The stories they cover range from main headlines to other off-beat topics. I have learned so much about random stuff that I would otherwise never know about. For instance, did you know that people who use more cognitive decision making skills during the day tend to eat more unhealthy? It relates to the fact that the brain is tired of trying to make the right choice all day and just wants a break. I also learned about a priest named Father G, who founded "Homeboy Industries" and works with gang members. His story is incredible and I now want to go pick up his latest memoir called "Tattoos on the Heart." I was so excited one Saturday to catch Ice-T guest star on Wait! Wait! It was hilarious to listen to him banter back and forth with Peter Sagal and take a quiz on panty hose :)
Since I love the radio station so much, I knew it was time to give back. I hate to admit that I am one of those listeners that has never donated. During the pledge drives, I always feel guilty but just put it off and don't do it. That is why I decided to put it on my 101 list. It was finally time for me to help out and support one of the favorite things in my life, so it was perfect timing when they started to advertise for their Spring Pledge Drive.
I finally called in my donation last week! In true procrastinator style I donated on the final day of the pledge drive. It's nice that they let you spread the donation out over the course of a year. A small amount will automatically be charged to my card each month which is probably less than what I pay for coffee each week.
I am now a proud sustaining member of WNYC and another item closer to completing my list!
Way to support NPR! I loved Ice-T on Wait Wait - my must have for running.

This is something I totally must do too. I listen to NPR every morning on my drive to school. Every time they started plugging their Spring Pledge Drive I would get a little annoyed but also realized in the back of my mind, "If I would just donate a little, maybe I wouldn't have to hear this pitch so much!" I will donate soon!
